The long term effects of pesticides and herbicides are unclear, but a scary picture is beginning to emerge. We can control the safety of our food when we buy organic. Organic means foods that have not been sprayed with synthetic chemicals and have been grown in safe soil. This is becoming an issue of urgency as many now talk of the problems of contaminated foods and supplements since the Japanese nuclear accident in 2011 after the tragic earthquake and tsunami there.
Everywhere we research nowadays stresses – Look for foods that are labeled “certified organically grown”. We already know the urgent importance of that and many have been growing their own vegies, etc, too for years now. My veggie garden is thriving and a happy place for me to visit too.
Organic foods may not be totally pesticide-free so be wary of the following fruits and vegetables, as they contain some of the highest amounts of toxic pesticides:
- Peaches Grapes
- Apples Strawberries
- Pears Raspberries
- Winter squash Spinach
- Green Beans Potatoes

All foods, whether organic or not should be washed and cleaned thoroughly to rinse off bacteria, as well as pesticides where possible.
Look at the Mercury and Fish information in our archives for information about mercury content in fish too. We all know now of the bone making necessity for strontium in our diets. It was not that long ago that we thought calcium was enough to keep the bones dense and strong! The more facts we learn then the more we can look after our brains and bodies with responsible choices.
It does appear now that there is a very urgent need for organic foods in some areas of health. This can be expensive so we all need good incomes just to provide for that problem of modern living issues with organic diets.
